Pivot to Care

When a loved one, usually a member of your family suddenly needs different or long term care, the unanticipated role of caregiver may fall on you.

Caring for someone who may not be fully able to make or act on decisions is very difficult. You are thrust in a new role where you need to not just make decisions based on advice of the doctor but also to coordinate all activities and people involved in care management. Many times, you are doing the actual care giving to a spouse, parent or child. You lose sleep just keeping up with all the medical data and information. Suddenly, your work, studies and personal activities are affected to the point of disarray. You worry that your physical and emotional well-being may slide.

In our Care Pivot program, we are your partner in this difficult transition. We help you navigate through voluminous new information, clear barriers and learn to delegate care. In all these we also have conversations about your context : your life, values, relationships, strengths and sense of purpose.

During my first session in our Care Pivot Program, I sensed the client's fear as soon as he spoke. As I waded through his worry-filled assumptions, I eased his dread with insightful questions, listening attentively, and clarifying misconceptions. Soon, his voice was less anxious and more receptive to hopeful ways of thinking. Knowledge eclipses fear. He began to feel empowered to do the right thing for his ailing family member. I have planted seeds of optimism which could be our light in ensuing conversations.
